History: Thousands of years ago, rulers often. Gone are the days when cigars represented backroom politics and big business boardrooms, when ladies would have to leave the dining room so that the gentlemen could talk freely over brandy and cigars. Gone, too, are the days when little girls slipped colorful cigar bands over their ring fingers, pretending to be engaged to the boy they had a crush on. While these practices are gone, cigar bands have now come into their own as collectibles. Gustave Bock is credited with the invention of the cigar band in about 1854, and with helping to build the cigar industry in Cuba. The majority of the early bands were made around 1880 in Germany, a country noted for the art of lithography. German lithographers were known for their use of brilliant colors, especially bright red, green, gold and silver. The cigar band serves a triple purpose. It helps hold the wrapper intact, protects the fingers from stain and scent of tobacco, and is an eye-catcher due to the design. In America, the Industrial Revolution after the Civil War brought cigars into the marketplace. Wore the glittering orbs to guard their power and ensure their safety. These stones were placed in their crowns to protect themselves from enemies and ward off evil. At times, opals were even ground up and consumed to protect an individual from nightmares and evil spirits (although we dont recommend this). In modern times opals are known to bring about happiness and confidence for the wearer. The rich play of color in some Opals gives them unsurpassed splendor and mystique. For this reason, Opal is one of the most fascinating and fabled of gemstones. History: The rich play of color in some Opals gives them unsurpassed splendor and mystique. The birthstone for October is an Opal. Opal is classified in three primary types according to body color supporting the play of colors. These types are black, white and transparent. Opals can have body colors such as colorless, yellow, brown, red or orange. The later is better known under the name of fire opal. The most famous opals are harlequin, pinpoint, flash, peacock and flame opal. Amethyst was once revered as the jewel of the gods. Amethyst is the official gemstone of the province of Ontario. Amethyst is the birthstone for the month of February, and the official gem for Wednesday, Jupiter and those born under the sign of Pisces. Amethyst is the official birthstone for February as adopted by the American National Association of Jewelers in 1912. It is also the birth stone for the Zodiac sign of Pisces. See the birthstone table for additional references to this stone on alternative birthstone charts. Amethyst is suggested as a gem to give on the 4th, 6th and 17th wedding anniversaries. Amethyst is the purple variety of quartz and the most valued member of the quartz family. It must be purple to be amethyst, but it can display a range of shades including deep purple, light lilac, lavender and mauve. Top quality amethyst is a deep medium purple with rose-colored flashes. Its purple color made it a stone of royalty for many thousands of years. See note about incorrectly named “green amethyst”. Amethyst is a 7 on the Mohs hardness scale (Mohs scale rates hardness from 1-10). The Hebrew word for amethyst is ahlamah which means dream; thus, the stone was supposed to cause lovely dreams and visions and if you dream of amethyst you will be free from harm. Leonardo da Vinci believed amethyst had the power to control evil thoughts, to quicken intelligence, and to make men shrewd in business matters. Throughout history amethyst has been used to guard against drunkenness and is thought to be helpful in overcoming addiction. It has been used for hearing disorders, insomnia, headaches and other pain. Some sources suggest it is used to stabilize mental disorders. The ancient Greeks believed opal could give the wearer the power of foresight. The Romans revered opal as the symbol of hope and purity, and believed it could protect from disease. Eastern people regarded it as the symbol of truth. The Ancient Arabs believed it came from heaven, and that it acquired the play of color from flashes of lightning. In the Middle Ages, opal was thought to be beneficial for eyesight, some people even believed it could render the wearer invisible.
